Do You Like To Climb?

Yesterday I read the children’s book called, ‘Up, Up, Down.’

This children’s book was written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

It’s an adventurous children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young girl called Anna that liked to climb.

Inside the house Anna would climb anything, however it always ended badly, as she usually fell.

Although her parents warned her not to climb Anna wouldn’t listen.

Then one day she decided to go outside where she found a huge tree, this excited Anna very much.

Now climbing a tree of any size is not a good idea, because if you fall, you’ll really going to hurt yourself.

How To Wear A Paper Bag

Yesterday I read the children’s book called, ‘The Paper Bag Princess.’

This children’s book was written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the story of a princess named Elizabeth and how she rescued a prince.

Princess Elizabeth and Prince Ronald were to be married, that was until a dragon destroyed the castle and took the prince away.

Princess Elizabeth wanted to find her prince but the dragon had burnt all her clothes and all she could find was a paper bag to wear.

Following the trail of destruction left by the dragon the Princess finds the dragon.

But now, how is she to convince it to release prince Ronald?

Would You Ask A Dinosaur To Dinner?

One morning last week I read the children’s book called, ‘Never ask a Dinosaur to Dinner.’

This children’s book was written by Gareth Edwards and illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees.

It’s a delightful children’s rhyming picture book that shares a little boys imaginative account of what happened at his house from dinner time to bedtime.

The story contains a dinosaur, a shark, a beaver, a tiger, a bison and a barn owl.

Most young children I know love stories about dinosaurs and sharks, but don’t really know anything about beavers, tigers, bison’s or barn owls which makes this children’s book an interesting read.

The storylines creative but also educational as each animal’s appearance and instincts are explained in a very simple way for young children to understand.

This is a lovely book to read together especially at bedtime and with Teddy (bear) as he does get a mention.

About A Hole In The Zoo

One day last week I read the children’s book called, ‘Hole in The Zoo.’

Hole in the Zoo was written by Chloe and Mick Inkpen.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the story of zoo animals that come from the house at Number 2.

With its wonderful storyline it’s a great book to introduce zoo animals to young children.

It’s also great to read together before visiting a zoo so they’d be able to recognize the different animals instantly.

In my opinion this book is a good teaching aid. As not only will they learn the different days of the week, but they’ll also learn about the different types of animals that live in a zoo.

Although there are no numerical numbers to recognize, you could still interact with your child by guessing how many animals have come from the house at Number 2, before counting them together.

How To Trick A Smart Fish

One day last week I read the children’s book called, ‘Give Me Back My Dad.’

This children’s book was written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the story of a young girl named Cheryl and her first experience at ice fishing.

When Cheryl and her dad went ice fishing, they didn’t know how their day would turn out.

However, they didn’t expect to be outwitted by a fish which is what happened in this case, for when a huge smart fish caught Cheryl with a candy bar it wouldn’t let her go.

Now that the huge fish had her captive under the ice how was her father going to get her back?

The other problem was that these smart fish liked to trick people with goodies in order to catch them.

So, will her father end up under the ice too or will they go home to a fish supper?

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a little dog named Fred. 

Fred can sit and stay and catch a ball all day but when his owners call out ‘Fred,’ he doesn’t understand what a Fred is. 

What does it mean? 

What is a Fred? 

He understands sit and stay but not a Fred! 

Will he think it’s another word for play, sit or stay or will he work out that it’s his actual name.

A House Made Of Sand

I read the children’s book called, ‘The Sandcastle Contest,’ the other afternoon.

This children’s book was written by Robert Munsch and is beautifully illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young boy called Matthew and a sandcastle contest.

When Mathew went on a camping trip with his family their first stop just happened to be close to the beach.

Down on the beach he saw many people making statues and castles out of sand for a contest.

Excited he decided to enter.

Personally, I think he only entered to try and win the prize, a bathtub full of ice cream, yummy.

Using all his skills he created a house, a sand house, a house made out of sand.

Wow, how cool is that.

But with the judges believing it to be a real house how will he ever convince them that it’s really made of sand!

I read the children’s book called, ‘Swamp Water,’ the other day.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young girl named Victoria and a very special lunch.

Victoria’s grandmother wanted to take her somewhere different for a special lunch from their usual eateries, where they neither sold hamburgers, chicken fingers or tacos.

So, when Victoria’s grandmother took her to a fancy restaurant it wasn’t what she’d expected.

When Victoria asked the waiter for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of swamp water, she learns that neither were on the menu.  This didn’t go down too well.

I read the children’s book called, ‘Put Me in a Book.’

This children’s book was written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the unusual tale of how a young girl called Hailey ended up in a book.

On a school outing at a park Hailey saw an author writing a book. He appeared to be having a little trouble finishing it.

When Hailey learned that he wanted a kid to feature inside the book, she asked if she could be in the book, so the writer happily picked her up, flattened her and stuck her like a page in the book, then the teacher took her back to school.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t how Hailey wanted to be put in a book, she expected to be written in, not physically put in the book.

Now stuck inside how could she ever escape?

What Not To Pack On Moving Day

I read the children’s book called, ‘Moving Day,’ one day last week.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young girl named Danielle and the day she moved.

It was moving day and after hanging about just watching her parents rushing around packing things into boxes, she was told to go and help pack some things too.

Not sure what to pack, her mischievous side came into play and so she decided to pack her brothers and sisters, which is not really a good idea.

And so, after they’d moved into the new house and the boxes were opened that contained her brothers and sisters, she found out how mad they were.

Since moving in they’d been chasing her and when they catch her, she will experience for herself what it’s really like inside a cardboard box.

How To Catch A Fish

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young girl called Kristi and her first fishing expedition.

On a first ever fishing trip with her dad and due to unforeseen bad weather conditions, Kristi fell into the ocean.

When her dad lifted her out, he was surprised to see that she’d caught a large fish with her bare hands and when Kristi said she loved fishing, he threw her back into the ocean again to catch a second one, unfortunately this time it was too large to take home.

I read the children’s book called, ‘Deep Snow,’ the other morning.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a father and his two daughters that have a snow adventure.

When sisters Ali and Kate get stuck in a snow drift their father tries very hard to get them out. Eventually he manages to pull them out, but then he finds that they’re missing their boots.

Being a good dad, he tries to retrieve the boots, but as he reaches further and further into the hole he unfortunately falls in and finds himself stuck.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young girl named Miranda and how she accidently won a race.

Miranda’s father had entered a race and needed some water to drink before it started, so to help, Miranda went to get a bottle of water for him.

Unfortunately, before she could get back to him the horn was heard which started the race, undeterred Miranda looked for her father chasing after each runner to find out where he was.

She didn’t know it at the time, but she’d beaten all the other runners and won the race.

But after hugging him he told her that it wasn’t the right type of hug, so she decided to try something different.

So, she introduced him to different types of animals to hug instead.

Every other week Kelsey stayed with her dad and his cat, and each time Kelsey would take an extra item in her enormous suitcase to remind her of home.

However, when Kelsey’s mum stops her from taking the dog, she finds another unique way of taking it.

Also, there was another issue, the cat!

His father tried desperately to persuade him to pull the plug out, but before doing so Adam gave him a list of things that he wanted.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young girl named Camilla who falls ill on her first day of school, to a bad case of stripes.

The doctors and specialists were all unsure of what had caused the stripes, but then she found that her skin could change colour and show different patterns too.

Then it got worse.

She began to form into other shapes, until finally she’d become unrecognizable.

Are You Ever Too Old For Braids?

I read the children’s book called, ‘Braids,’ the other day. 

This children’s book was written by Robert Munsch and is beautifully illustrated by Dave Whamond.
It’s a delightful witty children’s picture book that tells the tale of a young girl named Ashley.

After her mum took hours to braid her hair, Ashley was sad because she’d missed playing outside with the other kids.

That was up until her grandmother arrived, for as soon as her grandmother saw Ashley’s mother’s hair, she decided to braid it too and then the chase was on.

Ashley’s mother didn’t want her hair braided, for as far as she was concerned, she was an adult now and could leave it messy if she wanted too, but Ashley’s grandmother insisted and began chasing her all over the house.

The Pout Pout Fish

I recently read the children’s book called, ‘The Pout Pout Fish.’

This children’s book was written by Deborah Diesen and illustrated by Dan Hanna.

It’s a delightful rhyming children’s picture book tells the tale of a glum looking fish called the pout pout fish.

As the pout pout fish meets other sea creatures, each of them tried to make him smile, but he still couldn’t help looking glum.

Then one day as he sat about looking glum and gloomy a kiss is planted on his pout and then he becomes quite cheery. Yippee!

Sometimes we all get a little gloomy like the pout pout fish, but a hug makes all the difference.

A hug makes us happy.

This is a lovely story that children will like as it has a happy ending.

The Selfish Crocodile

I recently read the children’s book called, ‘The Selfish Crocodile.’

This children’s book was written by Faustin Charles and illustrated by Michael Terry.

It’s a wonderful children’s picture book that tells the tale of a very selfish crocodile.

The river in the forest should be shared by all of the animals, so when a large river crocodile tells all of the other animals to stay away from the river or they’d be eaten, they do, for they don’t want to be eaten.

That was until the selfish crocodile had very bad toothache.

So, which animal do you think would risk their life to help the crocodile?

If I was one of the animal’s I wouldn’t help the bully crocodile. Why should I when he’d threatened to eat me previously. Also, what’s to stop him from eating me after I’d helped him?

Unfortunately, there are also selfish crocodiles in schools; they shout, their loud, they bully, they threaten and make most of us very unhappy.

So, if your bullied by a selfish crocodile in anyway at your school then tell a teacher, your mum or dad, brother or sister, aunt, uncle, or a grandparent, for by letting an adult know, they can deal with the selfish crocodile so that you don’t have too.

When I Get Bigger

I recently read the children’s book called, ‘When I Get Bigger.’

This children’s book was written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book tells the tale of the little critter and what he’ll do when he gets bigger.

This book reminds me of when I was little and what I wanted when I was bigger.

Most children believe that being bigger will give them more freedom, but it usually does the opposite and comes with restrictions.

As you get older, certain allowances are given, like for example; when you learn to listen and can use a knife and fork then parents are happy to take you to a Toby carvery or other eating establishment. They’ll also allow you to stay up an hour later than usual, if your good.

As you get older you can negotiate having a sleep-over, and even getting a Saturday job, especially as you’ve now reached the age where you want to be independent.

Then as you become a teenager you want to experience new things, like; dating, clubbing, tasting your first drink, taking driving lessons and going to university etc.

A Cat Called Slinky Malinki

I recently read the children’s book called, ‘Slinki Malinki.’

This children’s book was written and illustrated by Lynley Dodd.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book about an adventurous cat called Slinki Malinki.

This children’s book tells the tale of a black cat that has two different personalities.

During the day he’s a cheeky and fun cat but as day turned to dusk, he turned wicked and sly.

At night Slinki Malinki became a cat burglar, taking things from houses that didn’t belong to him.

What a naughty cat.

It’s a great book that children would like especially if they have a cat.

Just Helping My Dad

I recently read the children’s book called, ‘Just helping My Dad.’

This children’s book was written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book about the little critter, who this time wants to help his dad.

So, whilst the little critters dad is still in bed, he makes breakfast. The mess in the kitchen should’ve been an indicator of how the day was going to unfold.

The day doesn’t go as planned and after the little critter ruins the plants and gets water inside the car, his parents worry about what he’ll help to do next!

This is a great book for both children and adults to read, as all children like to help by doing things. So, don’t diminish their enthusiasm or lack of patience with your own.

Remember we’re all teachers, children learn from us, so be enthusiastic and patient and enjoy learning together.

If You Happen To Have A Dinosaur

I read the children’s book the other day called, ‘If You Happen To Have A Dinosaur.’

This children’s book was written by Linda Bailey, and wonderfully illustrated by Colin Jack.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book about different dinosaurs.

This book is slightly different as it tells of how useful dinosaurs would be around the house.

“Hmm interesting, I hear you say.”

Well after reading this book I found out that there were lots of things that a dinosaur could do.

One small problem though, I haven’t got one!

If you’re one of the lucky few that has a dinosaur, then this is definitely the book for you.

Also, great to read if you haven’t got a dinosaur, as it’s always best to prepare.

A great book that all children would like, even the adults.

I Just Forgot

I recently read the children’s book called, ‘I Just Forgot.’  

This children’s book is written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer. 

It’s a delightful children’s picture book about the little critter, who just forgot.

Sometimes you forget to do things when you get up in the morning, so when the little critter forgot to make his bed and put the milk away, you know what type of day it’s going to be.

And throughout the day he’s reminded by his mum of what to do, for example to close the fridge door after opening it, but the little critter had an excuse for everything he’d forgotten to do.  

Remind you of anyone?

This is a great book for both children and adults to read as young children sometime get confused or can become forgetful just like the little critter. Adults too, can also get forgetful or confused like me, “Hmm, where am I?”

So, when you’re in the library next why not read the book, or you could with parental guidance watch the story on YouTube. Either way, tell me what you think.

And remember, with our busy lifestyles and schedules we all forget to do things, so the solution is;

‘Post-it notes,’ great for leaving notes around the house, now I never forget anything.

“Oh look, there’s one, I’m in the sitting room.”

We Share Everything

I read the children’s book called, ‘We Share Everything.’ 

This children’s book was written by Robert Munsch and is beautifully illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

It’s a delightful children’s picture book that tells the tale of two new students and their sharing experience at kindergarten.

When Amanda and Jeremiah first started kindergarten, they didn’t know what to do.

Then as one child played with a toy, it wasn’t long before the other child demanded it and had a tantrum. Each time this happened, the kindergarten teacher would go over to the pair and tell them in a calm voice;

“At kindergarten, we share everything.”

So, Amanda and Jeremiah begin to share, but not with toys. They shared and exchanged their clothes.

What will the kindergarten teacher say?

Will she be impressed or shocked by Amanda and Jeremiah sharing antics?

Personally, I think it’s a great book, both educational and fun to read that young children would like. It explains sharing in a simplistic way.
